Is it cheaper to leave a neon light in over the lunch hour to turn it off?
I was told years ago that it was better to leave a light on neon that to change over the lunch hour on and off since the cut off tube life is more than the cost of electricity. Is this true?
Changing the outside neon tube will increase the amount of time that light can be used for .. not necessarily increase the number of hours the lamp can be lit. Switching these tubes occasionally is the key to the problem and, indeed, is the change in the tube is supposed to use more electricity than the tube used in normal use during the day. The reason for this is that electrons in the tube need to kick to get flowing. This is described by the deadline, the impressive potential. Like a match .. A certain amount of energy must be used to get on. Therefore, these electrical use tubes BOOSTERS ballasts called to get enough high-voltage energy into the system to get it running.
